Dr Fiona Lowis

Clinical Psychologist

Fiona graduated from Queen’s College, Oxford University with a degree in psychology and philosophy.  Following this she worked at Leeds drug and alcohol addiction unit where she trained in CBT and Motivational Interviewing.  Fiona completed her Clinical Psychology training at the University of Surrey and has been practicing in the NHS for over 10 years. 

 

Fiona has held posts in a community mental health team and a team specialising in helping young people with psychosis.  Currently she works part time in an adult psychological therapy service delivering therapy to individuals and groups. Fiona works primarily with adults and young people, providing therapy for difficulties including depression, anxiety, OCD, abuse, addiction and trauma and psychosis.

 

Fiona uses a range of evidence based approaches to tailor treatment to the individual.  These include CBT, EMDR, Mindfulness approaches and Motivational Interviewing.   She has many years experience of helping people with complex and chronic difficulties as well as more ‘here and now’ problems.

 

Fiona a regularly delivers teaching on the Leeds Clinical Psychology doctorate course, and the MRC Psych course for psychiatrists in training.  She provides trainee placements in her NHS work and clinical supervision to other clinical psychologists.

 

Aside from clinical psychology, Fiona enjoys escaping on her mountain bike, or indulging in a good box set.

Yet another way dogs help the military: aeromedical patient evacuations (Thu, 22 Aug 2019)
Animal-assisted therapy has many benefits in health care. Yet, its biological and psychosocial effects in the military are unknown, especially for injured, airlifted patients. Researchers teamed up with a non-profit animal organization that trains therapy dogs to see if an animal-assisted intervention could reduce stress in this setting. Results showed that levels of the stress biomarkers cortisol, alpha-amylase, and immunoglobulin A, significantly decreased after a 20-minute intervention with the dogs, regardless of post-traumatic stress symptom severity.
